Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative showcasing celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces growing in strength within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

The latest chapter ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the first table of adventurers who will separate from the main group to embark on their separate journey, apart from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table consists of Teor (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), Wicander (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

The Reason for Division

Given 13 cast members, it was evident from the start that having everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

This explains, the initial installments of this story serve as an Introduction, intertwining the individual narratives before branching into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Schemers, and Questers.

What Defines the Combat Party

Per the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who are drawn to a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven story mode where diplomatic options are rare.

Upon first impression, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander might look unsuited, but the developments of episode 3 demonstrate why these particular heroes are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Reasons to Leave

First, the group understands precisely where to go next after a violent first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose demise kicked off the campaign’s events—manipulated the enemy for his own means, invading the hidden lair, attacking the character, and stealing all the powerful objects to dispose of.

The traitor then paid off his obligations and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the urban center, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each adventurer has a specific drive to depart the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the companion and trusted friend, desires revenge.
  • The adventurer knows the northern area and advises that it is a hostile location.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having defied his house’s orders to execute the fighter and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their reputation as prominent individuals in the powerful family could help the group enter locations they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, Teor vowed a eternal obligation to The savior for his deliverance and will now accompany him everywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the rulers that control the setting for a range of causes, making lingering locally too risky:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and Wicander turned against the powerful family and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This leaves them no alternative but to travel to the northern region in quest for the antagonist.

What’s Next?

From the latest episode’s post-show segment, we find out that the Soldiers table will be absent the following episode, leaving the other eight cast members to assemble the Explorers and Planners tables.

Fans can look forward to learning which characters will be where in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on next week.
