Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities issued video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
