Slot Insists He Is Safe and Has Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was natural for concerns to be raised about his future after another heavy defeat against the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their 9th loss in 12 games, marking the team's worst run after being demoted in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie title holders on a tough evening at Anfield.
“I'm confident, things are alright, I've received significant support from above,” the coach commented.
“It's important to change things and get a victory naturally but if you are coaching a team and underperforming then it's expected that people question you.”
He added, “I accept my position. This isn't the first time I’ve been in a difficult position but it is about time that we turned it around.”
Talks with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to expand on his discussions with the Liverpool hierarchy, Slot revealed:
“We communicate frequently. They assist to the team and for me and we have those conversations but they don't phone me constantly each day to say they back me.”
He further stated, “In the normal discussions I sense the confidence. But I've not talked to them after this match so far so we'll see.”
Persistent Issues and Squad Response
Slot expressed regret over recurring weaknesses from his squad in their Champions League defeat, namely poor finishing and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more direct in his evaluation of the club’s predicament.
“I don’t have the solutions. Honestly, I do not. I’m saying that to everybody,” Jones remarked.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don’t even need to wait to think about it. I’m past getting mad internally. I’m at the point now where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He continued, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen Liverpool all my life.”
“In recent memory, I've not seen a Liverpool team going through a period of this nature with outcomes like these.”
Jones finished, “However we still have the crest on our shirts. And until it is taken away, we’re always going to battle.”
“We will attempt to get this team back to the top, show everyone again the values of this club and the reason it's called the top club in the planet.”
“However currently, things are bad and it needs to change.”
