The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
His passing follows shortly after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
