The Siblings from the Dagestani Region Making Their Mark in Mixed Martial Arts and with Manchester United.

Ibragim Ibragimov grins as he thinks about how his clan's life has transformed since moving to England from Dagestan a decade ago.

"I love it here," the PFL athlete declares.

"My father and I frequently remark, 'this is the nation I should have been born in.'"

The young man departed his home in the Caucasus region of Russia because his father was convinced a relocation spanning more than 3,000 miles promised better professional opportunities for him and his brothers.

The initial plan was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to finish school before enrolling in one of the nation's colleges.

However, reality has turned out slightly different for the Ibragimov household.

Ibragim is now a professional mixed martial arts fighter and is regarded as one of the leading talents in the PFL, a major MMA organization.

His brothers have chosen a different route in athletics and have each been contracted by Manchester United – with Amir aiming for a spot in the senior squad.

"The primary goal for us is to squeeze everything from our chosen fields," says Ibragim.

"I desire them to represent all of the best teams in the world. Now it is Man United, in the future it might be a another team."

From Grapplers to Soccer Prodigies

Located in the south of Russia, Dagestan has a mythical reputation among combat sports fans for producing a host of UFC titleholders in recent years.

The area has a long tradition in grappling, thriving in the sambo discipline and producing a host of Olympic and world champions.

This success is not a coincidence, though, as youth from the region are often encouraged to take up combat sports, specifically wrestling, almost as soon as they can walk.

"As a a kid, my dad was constantly telling me and my little brothers that we needed to be powerful, first to protect ourselves, your family, and your companions," states Ibragim.

"Therefore we all became accustomed to combat, and that's why everyone knows how to fight in Dagestan. It's not a surprise."

"Amir was a excellent wrestler. You can observe the move from wrestling to football; obviously, it assisted my younger brothers a lot."

"Many of the footballers he faces don't have the same base he has. That's why he's stocky, strong and really driven – because of wrestling."

Amir was just nine years old when he was being tested at Sheffield United. Unaware of his real age, coaches grouped him with boys significantly older.

He was unfazed by the mistake and was more than capable competing against older players because of his background in wrestling.

"They believed Amir and I were the identical age, apparently," says Ibragim.

Amir was recruited, together with Ibragim's younger brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The family's stay in South Yorkshire was brief, however, as just weeks after joining the Blades, Manchester United became aware of Amir's ability and he moved over the Pennines as a result.

"They faced Manchester United in a competition and Amir netted a brilliant free-kick," says Ibragim.

"One of their scouts saw him play and selected him straight away."

Half a dozen years after joining the Manchester United club and at the age of 15, Amir was one of the most youthful players in the club's history to train with the first team when he achieved this in April 2023.

"Know what he told me? 'This is where I should be'," Ibragim says.

"Is he able to be a first-team player for Manchester United? Absolutely. They should allow all the young players get game time now."

"In my opinion they would play less effectively than the existing first-team players. I think the young guys are more motivated than the current squad members."

Following that, Gazik and Muhammad, the younger once on the books of Manchester City, have likewise transferred to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this kid is talented," continues Ibragim.

"He learned everything faster than everyone else. He's a solid defender. He's going to be like a new Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'The Dream' to Compete at Old Trafford

Ibragim has also moved to Manchester and spends most of his days sharpening his MMA skills at Manchester Top Team.

In August, he spent three weeks in his homeland at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, assisting Islam Makhachev prepare for a November UFC championship bout.

"I would never have imagined I would be training under Khabib," Ibragim says.

"He was the greatest fighter in the world – and we constantly used to idolize him when we were young."

"Today, I'm here in his gym and training with Islam Makhachev."

Recently working with two UFC champions from Dagestan, it is no surprise Ibragim says he is eager to win a world title of his own someday.

But that does not prevent him from sometimes dreaming of representing United and walking out on the hallowed turf at Old Trafford, much like his brothers.

"I owned a PlayStation at home and I always used to play as Man United, scoring with legendary players," he says.

"Today, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's like a fantasy realized."

"A fight at Old Trafford? It's a dream for me. I was speaking to the PFL officials about it to see if they would make it happen. It would be enormous."
