Vince Gilligan Shares He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... For Now.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the hit program wrapping up—and Season 2 officially in the works—Gilligan and his team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Has the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way.
“There are some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to discard a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
